Detailing Two (Wheeled) Unique Machines
At STASH, we’re used to seeing some of the world’s most interesting cars pass through the detailing bay. But every now and then, something on two wheels rolls through the doors and gives our team the opportunity to approach their craft from a different perspective. For Brodie, our Master Detailer, bikes are particularly special. He enjoys the process of detailing motorcycles just as much as the machines themselves. The compact dimensions, intricate components and exposed mechanicals create a completely different detailing challenge to a car and one that rewards patience, precision and an appreciation for the finer details. The two bikes featured in this detail are a perfect example. Although considerably smaller than the cars we normally work on, they demand no less time or attention. In fact, the size of the machines can make the process even more complex. Smaller polishing machines, tighter working areas and countless crevices mean more opportunity for attention to detail.
Starting With the Details
The process begins with a careful waterless pre-wash using AMMO Frothee. The objective is to safely remove the light dust and surface contamination while working methodically through the countless gaps, edges and components that make up each machine. On a motorcycle, contamination can find its way into places that simply don't exist on a car. Around brackets, fasteners, engine components and tight bodywork, Brodie works carefully to ensure the surfaces are clean and ready for the correction stage without compromising the delicate finishes.
Correcting the Paint
Once clean and prepared, both bikes undergo a two-step paint correction process across their painted body panels. Using both the RUPES 3-inch and 6-inch machines allows Brodie to work across the different shapes of the bikes, while maintaining the control required around tighter sections. The first stage uses an AMMO Sheer Cutting Pad to remove heavier scratches, defects and sanding marks from the paintwork. The second stage moves to the AMMO WAFL foam pad and X-Foliate polishing fluid, completing the finish and removing the marks left behind during the initial correction. When working with bikes some components are carefully removed to provide better access, allowing Brodie to achieve consistent defect removal and an even finish.
Bringing the Metalwork Back to Life
The paint is only part of what makes these bikes special. With exposed chrome, aluminium and mechanical components forming such a significant part of their character, the metalwork receives the same level of attention. AMMO Flux Metal Polish is used across the chrome and aluminium components to restore clarity and bring back the depth and brightness of the metal.
Protection That Completes the Detail
Once the correction and polishing stages are complete, every freshly polished surface is carefully wiped down with an isopropyl alcohol mix. This removes any remaining polishing oils and prepares the surfaces for ceramic protection. AMMO Reflex Pro II is then applied across the majority of the bikes' surfaces, providing a durable protective layer and enhancing the finish. For the wheels and engine components, AMMO Gelee Metal & Wheel Coating is used to provide dedicated protection to these high-contact and mechanically exposed areas.
The Craft of Bike Detailing
There is something particularly satisfying about detailing a motorcycle. The machines may be smaller, but the process is every bit as involved. In many ways, the reduced scale makes the craft even more demanding. For Brodie, that is exactly the appeal. His enthusiasm for bike detailing is evident in the way he approaches these machines.
